INTRODUCTION
- Purpose of book of Hebrews.
- To show the supremacy of Christ.
- This the writer has done in several ways.
- The Key, Purpose, Point of it all is to
show the Redemptive Ministry of Christ
in a New Covenant in which our "sins
will be remembered no more".
SUPERIOR TO THE OLD
- CHRIST'S REDEMPTIVE MINISTRY IS SUPERIOR
IN FOUR WAYS:
- It is an offering made by Christ
entering through "the greater and more
perfect tent";
- It is an offering that Christ made
with "his own blood", not the blood of
goats and calves.
- It is an offering that thus
secured not an annual but an "eternal
redemption.
- It is an offering, therefore, that
needs be made only "once".
- "Who through the eternal Spirit
offered himself without blemish to God."
v 14.
VICARIOUS ATONEMENT
- Definition of Term:
"substituted" performed in the place of
another" "retroactive"...canceling the
sins of the former age that were left untouched.
- "And for this cause he is the
mediator of a new covenant, that a death having taken
place for the redemption of the transgressions that were
under the first covenant, they that have been called may
receive the promise of eternal inheritance."d
(v. 15).
- The Benefit of Christ's Sacrifice Was
Eternal!
PAST PRESENT FUTURE
GAVE NEW COVENANT
- As costly as the first was...it did not
give man the right relationship with God.
- It made man aware of: (a.) His sin
and (b.) God love and desire for man.
- It was completed and passed
away.(8:13-9:1).
- CHRIST IS MEDIATOR OF A NEW COVENANT!
(v. 15).
1. Role of a Mediator....
- Covenants: (a.) Rainbow =meant:
(b.) Through Moses = meant: (c.) Now through
Christ...what it means to the world (Mark
16:15,16).
- BUT...(I Cor. 1:23) If
Christ died...This had been a problem for the Jew
- This part of the book of Hebrews
is to explain and give light on this (death
2. Thus To The Hebrews He Wrote:
The Necessity of
Christ's Death
- "Even the first covenant has not
been dedicated (ratified) without blood" v. 18.
- Moses..."took the blood of
calves and goats..."
- Sprinkled both the book and the
people"
- "This is the blood of the
covenant which God commanded you."
- Secondly a Testament is not in effect
as long as the testator lives V. 16
- The New Covenant - Will - could
not become effective until Christ died.
- "...will remember the sins no
more.
- It was required in order to
dedicate, institute or ratify the new covenant.
Secondly it was needed in order to cleanse or
purify the people who are covered by the covenant
and to secure for them release or remission from
the sin which otherwise would estrange them from
God. "Without the shedding of blood
there is no forgiveness of sins" v. 22.
- READ....vs 23 - 28.
CONCLUSION
- FINALITY OF CHRIST'S SACRIFICE:
- Death ... the ultimate...can't do
more.
- Could not offer Himself
repeatedly.
- "And inasmuch as it is appointed
unto men once to die, and after this cometh
judgment:" v. 27.
- As we view the finality of
Christ's death....
- We see the surety of our death...
- THEN COMETH THE JUDGMENT.....
- The effect of Christ's Death on
our judgment....
- Have you accepted the Covenant
that He has offered you??/
