INTRODUCTION
- "Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers
of a heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High
Priest of our confession, even Jesus;" (3:1).
- This vision of the absolute supremacy and
sufficiency of Christ dominates the
thoughts of the whole Epistle.
GOD HAS SPOKEN
- VARIOUS WAYS GOD SPOKE OF OLD TO OUR
FATHERS.
- A God who speaks to man.
- The distinguishing mark of true
religion.
- He has never left Himself without
witness.
- TO OUR FATHERS:
- Not just the patriarchs.
- But all of the faithful.
- BY MEANS OF "THE PROPHETS".
- Prophet means -
"spokesman".
- All of those through whom God
spoke. Not just Moses.
- BUT IN THESE "LAST DAYS"
- Does not concern itself with
length of time.
- O.T. often speaks of "last
days" (Gen. 49:1; Num. 24;14; Isa. 2:2; )
- IN THESE "LAST DAYS" GOD
SPEAKS TO US THROUGH HIS SON.
- The obvious suggestion is that God
had for us a message that was:
- Greater than one that
could be carried by just any messenger.
- But one that demanded God's
Son."
- It is to Him that we now want to
turn our attention.
- Since God has spoken to us
in His Son
(v.2) It is all important that we
know "WHO IS THE SON!"
Son - Superior To
Angels
- IMPORTANCE ANCIENT WORLD GAVE TO ANGELS.
- In O.T. angels often appeared to
men.
- Abraham (Gen. 18)
- Lot; (Gen. 19)
- At sacrifice of Isaac, (Gen. 22)
- To Moses; (Exodus 2).
- GREEKS GAVE MUCH EMPHASIS TO COMING DIVINE
Messengers.
- IN N.T. AMONG CHRISTIANS AROSE PROBLEM.
- Was Christ....God?....If so how could He
die?
- Was Christ...Just a man?....If so how
could he Atone?
- Therefore....Angel....This would solve
their problem. Much of Colossian
Letter written to end this controversy.
THOU ART
"MY" SON
- "For unto which of the angels said he
at any time, Thou art my Son, This day have I begotten
thee/ and again, I will be to him a Father, And he shall
be to me a Son? (V 5).
- Never spoken to an angel.
- Thou art "my Son."
- "Let all God's angels worship
him" (v. 6).
- Angels wind, servants flame of fire (v. 7)
- To son..."Thy throne, O god is for
ever and ever" (v. 8)
E. Scepter of thy
kingdom...(v. 9).
WHO IS THIS SON?
- HE IS APPOINTED HEIR OF ALL THINGS:
- Heir is natural consequence of son
ship.
- His nature is Eternal.
- ONE THROUGH WHOM GOD CREATED THE WORLD.
- See John 1:1ff
- He, the Son is not a part of
Creation.....BUT CREATOR.
- HE REFLECTS THE GLORY OF GOD.
- A time when God was without a
world.
- But there never was a time when He
was without glory.
- Jesus Christ is the perfect
shining forth and reflection of God among men.
- BEARS THE VERY IMAGE OF GOD'S NATURE.
- An exact reproduction.
- Seal....Impression made by seal.
- UPHOLDING THE UNIVERSE BY HIS WORD OR
POWER.
- He is the Sustainer of the Cosmos.
- Not the idea of a weight lifter
who holds it up.
- But he bears and guides along the
universe in the very way that he wants it to go.
- HE MADE "PURIFICATION FOR SINS"
- Priestly symbolism.
- Of His own Death and
Sacrifice...he secured for us what could never be
attained through Levitical procedures.
- Thus the Son is also The
Redeemer.
- SAT DOWN AT THE RIGHT HAND OF MAJESTY ON
HIGH:
-
2. But enthroned with Him.
THE SON IS ......
- EIGHT SUCCESSIVE STATEMENTS ABOUT
CHRIST:
- In His eternal being He is
genuine, absolute Deity, the
visible outshining of God's glory.
- In the Divine ordering of
the universe...
- He is its Creator,
Sustainer and End.
- By Him it was
made, He upholds it.
- He is its Heir.
- He is men's (our) Prophet,
Priest and King.
- In Him god spoke His final
word of revelation; so He brings God
to men.
- In His own Person He
purged our sins, and finished
the work of reconciliation. So He
brings men to God.
- He now sits enthroned at
God's right hand.
- As the exalted God-Man He
has obtained by inheritance a position
far above all others.
CONCLUSION
- The full significance of this revelation
and redemptive work is appreciated only by those who see
by faith that the Christ once crucified is ow enthroned,
and is able to save completely or to the uttermost all
who draw near to God through Him. (8:1; 7:25).
- It is through Him... THE SON....This Great
SON that God Speaks to You.
- What are YOU going to do with the Message?
